Investing in a Sustainable Future

We don’t just talk about taking action when it comes to large-scale investments in waste reduction infrastructure - we make it happen.

We know that by investing in sustainable ‘green’ initiatives, we can help reduce our environmental impact and create a healthier future for ourselves and generations to come. To date, we have spearheaded a number of sustainable initiatives in the Auckland region to benefit our community.

Organic Waste
By recycling our green waste, we are helping to protect the environment. Every year, we divert over 25,000 tonnes of organic waste from landfills and turn it into valuable compost for local use. This reduces greenhouse gas emissions and air pollution while reducing our impact on the planet.

Construction and Demolition Waste
Reusing and recycling construction waste conserves natural resources. In the last year, we have saved over 15,000 tonnes of construction waste from landfills to be reused, recovered and repurposed as biofuels, new metals, glass, concrete and rubble.

Commodity Recycling
Recycling is an essential part of protecting our environment and reducing waste. We offer a full suite of recycling services for paper, cardboard, plastic, glass, metal and electronics. Last year we proudly recycled 30,000 Tonnes of commodity recycling.

Sustainability Reporting
We provide sustainability reports and waste audits for our business customers. This means our business customers can better understand their environmental impacts, and we assist our customers in developing more effective strategies for reducing their carbon footprint.

Education Tours
We run education tours at most of our sites across Northland & Auckland. Recently, we were delighted when Snell’s Beach School approached our Warkworth team for a visit to their new Re:Sort, as they were learning about sustainability and the environment this term. The aim was to provide an immersive experience to teach students about recycling on-site, how we divert waste from landfills, and what happens when we throw it away. We were excited at the prospect of hosting just over 100 years 5 and 6's in two groups for the day.

To make the tour truly memorable, we decided to incorporate practical learning into our activities - such as a recycling race, building a mini landfill model, and deconstructing scrap metal - that would spark curiosity and engage everyone involved. Our approach was an instant hit with students and teachers alike; even bringing out the inner child in some of us!

Construction waste to biofuel
We are thrilled to introduce our new 'Re: Fuel Your Wood' initiative to the Auckland District! By separating wood waste at our operational sites with sufficient floor space, we can divert it from landfill and repurpose it as an alternative fuel source. Our wood processing facility, based in Whangarei and Silverdale, has been purpose-built for this endeavour, where recovered timber from across the district is chipped and used to replace coal in concrete production. This not only improves CO2 emissions but also reduces the amount of waste that would otherwise end up in landfills.

Green waste to compost
We've been busy diverting green waste from landfills and turning it into compost! Any green waste from your kerbside green waste wheelie bins or dropped off at our Transfer Stations is now taken to a purpose-built facility where it is shredded and taken through the composting process turning it into high-quality, nutrient-rich compost to use in gardens. Composting is a natural process of decomposition and a great way to divert it from landfills, where it creates damaging gases.
